The Use of Pearls in Chinese Medicine
According to the Chinese medicine principles, pearls can help to relieve uneasiness of body & mind, dispel the internal heat or fever, diminish the inflammation and smooth the skin. It can be used to cure the epilepsy, infantile convulsions, palpitation, insomnia and the ulcers of throat and mouth.
Pearls have been used for health-related purposes since their earliest discovery by man. Interestingly enough, the modern pharmaceutical industry continues to use pearls in medicine. In particular, pearls which are of inferior quality and cannot be used in jewelry are ground into a fine powder and used to prepare high-quality pharmaceutical calcium.
Other conditions for which pearls were prescribed as treatments include memory loss, insomnia, asthma, jaundice, liver ailments, heart problems, infertility, and insect or snake bites. Clearly, the pearl was believed to be an extremely powerful gem!
From ancient China and India to medieval Europe and Arabia -- and in almost every culture in between -- pearls have been used for medicinal purposes ranging from aphrodisiacs to cures for insanity. Pearls could simply be worn as jewelry for their curative powers; or they could be ground up and made into potions, balms, and salves used to treat a wide variety of ailments and conditions. One legend said that a pearl placed in the navel could cure stomach disorders!
China has been using pearls in their medicine for over 2000 years. All complete collections of Chinese medicines include marine pearls. The southern marine pearls in China have been well known all around the world not only because they are of fine quality and long-lasting luster, but also that the radiant marine pearls grow in the natural and Non-pollution Sea. South pearls contain 18 kinds of amino acids and many trace elements that are essentail to the human body, especially a kind of non-protein amino acid named bezoar. Bezoar is very important amino acid in human body. It is a nerve regulating material in the central nerves.
Modern techniques have shown that pearls can retard the process of caducity. Therefore, pearls are very good skin-care products. A famous doctor named Li Shizhen in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) said in his The Categories of Chinese Medicine; “The pearls can smooth the skin if applied on the face. They can also remove the dirt in the skin if applied on the hands and feet.” Chinese women have used pearls as cosmetics since ancient times. Constant application can make the skin delicate, smooth the skin and retard the process of aging.
