Facts About Acquired Brain Injuries
According to the Brain Injury Association, U.S.A., one American sustains a brain injury every 15 seconds.
An estimated 5.3 million Americans (a little more than 2% of the U.S. population) currently live with disabilities that are the result of a brain injury.
According to the Office of Advocacy and Injury Prevention of the Brain Injury Association of Kentucky, approximately 8,000 new, significant brain injuries occur in the state each year.
There are more than 100,000 citizens in Kentucky with acquired brain injuries.
Brain injury is the single greatest cause of death and disability among young people.
The majority of these injuries occur to males between 20 and 30-years of age.
The number one cause of traumatic brain injuries is motor vehicle accidents, accounting for 50% of cases. The second leading cause is falls, followed by violence. Other causes of brain injuries include: sports and recreational accidents, child and spouse abuse, Shaken Baby Syndrome, and occupational injuries.
The cost of traumatic brain injury in the U.S. is estimated to be $48.3 billion annually. Hospitalization accounts for $31.7 billion, and fatal brain injuries cost the nation $16.6 billion each year.
